5 Martha KING (ROUSE)1784-1856 |
|||
m Stephen SOANES 1814 |

||
|
Martha was born in 1784, and baptised at Shipton-on-Cherwell, the daughter of Susannah ROUSE who was unmarried at the time. When Martha was two years old, her mother married Robert KING, a blacksmith from the next parish of Bletchingdon. The family settled in Bletchingdon and Martha took the surname KING. Martha married Stephen SOANES of Forest Hill when she was 30. Stephen was a lath and hurdle maker, and Forest Hill is about 8 miles from Bletchingdon along a good road. They had four children at Forest Hill, the first two probably twins as they were baptised on the same day just 9 months after the marriage. Life was probably hard in 1841, as Martha was then a live-in servant to a farmer while her husband was a labourer some 10 miles away in Kirtlington. They were together again in 1851 at Forest Hill, where Martha died in 1856 aged 72, ten years before Stephen. |

from census, Martha KING was born about
1787 in Bletchingdon; or about 1784 from age on death
certificate. There is no baptism of
Martha KING there, but the following entries were found in the adjacent parish
of Shipton-on-Cherwell, some 3 miles from Bletchingdon:

The date
of birth agrees with the death certificate age and there is no burial of Martha
ROUSE at Shipton; the only burial in the national
index is in 1794 at Langford some 20m from Bletchingdon. It seems very probable that Martha ROUSE
became Martha KING after the marriage of her mother and who stated in the
census that she was born in Bletchingdon in 1787, ie some 3 years younger than her real age; Martha was
brought up in Bletchingdon and may not have known of
her Shipton baptism.
If this analysis is correct, the father of Martha remains
unknown. A bastardy
bond if it exists may give the name of the reputed father. The family of Robert KING has however been
further researched, pending any evidence of Martha’s father

the 1841 census has Eliza SOANS an ag lab aged 20, so born c1816-1821; she may be another daughter,
or a niece C1819 at Forest Hill daughter of Stephen’s brother William; another
possibility is an enumerators error for Martha aged 50
